What’s a Lutheran?

I am curious how you answer that question. What do you tell someone when they ask you?

One of my final seminary assignments was to write out 500 words in response to this question. What is at the core of what it means to be a Lutheran Christian? What is essential to mention if you only had a few minutes to share?

Take a few minutes and write down what comes to mind.
Bring it with you to worship Sunday where you can nail it to the Reformation door.

As we remember 504 years of being the church of the Reformation, I encourage you to consider this: what is at the core of being a Lutheran, being a Christ-follower, is the gospel – the good news that God has, in Christ Jesus, brought salvation to the world as a free gift open to all, and has set us free from sin, death, and all the forces of evil that defy God, and free for giving ourselves away in service to God’s mission and our neighbor.

We, my friends, are people of grace.
We have received freely and so we give freely.
We have received freedom and so we work for freedom.
We have been forgiven and so we forgive and work toward reconciliation.
We have been made alive in Christ and so we join in the work of Christ who came that we might have life and have it abundantly.

See you online and in-person this Sunday as we are once again made new, reformed as the body of Christ, ready to give ourselves away for the sake of the good news.

May the God who loves you enough to give his very self to invite you and bring you into eternal life give you the humility and the passion to give your life for your neighbor.
