Each year on Christmas Eve, we hear this gospel text. How does this age old story inspire our faith in this day and age? How can the miraculous and mysterious birth of our Savior help us to keep our flames lit all throughout the year, to do the work of Christmas as Howard Thurman writes in his poem “I Will Light Candles This Christmas” – “To find the lost, / To heal the broken, / To feed the hungry, / To release the prisoner, / To rebuild the nations, / To bring peace among others, / To make music in the heart.”
